How Selah handles your information

What Selah saves

Your notes, unfinished drafts, highlights, tags, and last reading place are saved on the server under your signed-in account. In personal sign-in mode, Clerk manages email sign-in and sessions; Selah verifies your session on the server. The existing Sites sign-in mode uses its trusted account identity. These are separate accounts and their study is never automatically linked by email. Appearance, panel sizes, and the getting-started guide’s dismissal are saved in this browser.

An anonymous tab can keep its local writing when you first sign in. After that, the open tab remembers its original account identity in memory. If the signed-in account changes, Selah hides that tab’s study and blocks its requests until the original account returns. Unsaved writing stays in that tab; it is not transferred to the new account.

Notes are personal study records. They are not published to other readers. Saved notes and drafts are not automatically sent to the study assistant. Hosting administrators may have technical access to stored data; this is not end-to-end encrypted storage.

Bible providers

BSB, WEB, KJV, and ASV load directly from Selah. Reading or searching ESV sends the passage reference or search words to Crossway.

Your note text and tags are not included in Bible requests. Bible providers receive ordinary connection information, such as the IP address used for a request.

Personal translation keys are encrypted on the server. They are never included in a study export. ESV request limits use hashed key and account identifiers with timestamps; older entries are cleared when the next ESV request is processed after 24 hours. Hosting services may also keep operational logs.

Optional AI study

When your Codex companion is connected and you press Ask, Selah sends the current passage selection or deliberate selection basket, your question, and recent conversation through that computer to OpenAI using GPT‑6 Luna. Selah loads canonical Scripture for those references and can supply a limited number of additional passages requested during the answer. The companion uses ChatGPT sign-in and your Codex allowance. Selah has no separately billed OpenAI API fallback. Your saved notes and drafts are not included. AI study supports ESV, BSB, WEB, KJV, and ASV. Selected or retrieved ESV wording can be sent with your question within the translation limits. AI tools in supported browsers can also read the currently displayed passage in the permitted editions and navigate the reader. Those tools cannot read your study records.

Chat is temporary in this page and disappears on reload, clearing the chat, or choosing new selections for the assistant. Selah and its companion do not automatically save questions or answers. If you choose Edit as note, they become an editable, autosaved draft attached to every selected passage and labeled as AI study. Verified ESV quotations in the generated draft seed become passage references; your own writing is preserved. You can save, edit, export, or remove it like your other notes. The companion requests an ephemeral Codex thread. OpenAI’s processing and retention follow your account’s applicable terms and data settings; an ephemeral local thread does not override those settings. See Codex authentication and data handling. Your Codex sign-in credentials remain on the companion computer and are never sent to Selah or the browser.

Markings are saved as highlights or tagged notes only after you choose to apply them. Only the first selected passage is eligible for markings; retrieved passages grant no marking access. A technical receipt retains their identifiers, a payload hash, and timestamps to prevent duplicate saves and support undo. Edited markings are kept when you undo a batch. Request limits keep hashed connection and account identifiers and timestamps for up to 24 hours, cleared on the next provider request. This private connection is restricted to its owner.

Keeping and removing your writing

My notes → Export downloads your study as JSON or Markdown. JSON includes drafts, deleted notes, and highlights and can be restored into Selah. Keep a copy somewhere you trust; Selah cannot remove files you have downloaded.

Deleting a note moves it to Deleted. It stays there until you restore it or choose Delete permanently. Permanent deletion also removes unfinished edits attached to that note. Discarded or saved drafts leave an empty technical record so a delayed request cannot bring old writing back.

An account-deletion flow and a backup-retention policy are still being developed. This website is publicly accessible; your saved study stays associated with your signed-in account.
